Area of rescue solutions are a commonly overlooked space for growth in the industry. An area of rescue or (AOR) is an area, which has direct access to an exit, where people who are unable to evacuate may remain temporarily in safety to await further instructions or assistance during and emergency evacuation.
What does an Area of Rescue System Do?
An area of rescue must indicate the space with clear signage designating the area as an “Area of Rescue Assistance ” with directions for the use of the communication system. The ability to call for assistance and the location of the call station must be posted in the designated area as well.
An AOR System provides two-way, hands-free communication between each required location and the fire command center or a central control point location approved by the fire department. Our AOR solutions consist of a control point system for fire command center and a call station for area of rescue (refuge).
Code Compliance
The International Building Code (IBC) requires a two-way communication system in all new construction regardless if they have a sprinkler system or not. Also, significant remodels or change of use of a building may require Areas of Refuge. According to the IBC 1009.8, “Two-way communication systems shall be provided at the landing serving each elevator (or bank of elevators) on each accessible floor that is one or more stories above or below the exit level.”
Although there are certain exceptions for area of rescue requirements, all buildings that are one or more stories above or below the level of exit require a two-way communication system. This integrated unit also is NFPA code-compliant and can be utilized in various environments.
